970 powershift, reverse not working

The powershift on my 970 works perfect in all foward speeds, but not in reverse. When in reverse, the hydraulics are non-responsive, and the trans. pressure gauge shows very little pressure. I am thinking the oil seals on the C-4 clutch are bad. Is there anything else that could be wrong? The tractor will back up you speed up the engine in reverse, but not very fast. Thanks for any advice anyone can give me!

nb, you don't mention if the problem happened gradually or all at once. I would check the C-4 pilot spool for seizing first. It may not be actuating . Put a 300 psi gauge in the 1/8" plug on top of the control valve near the C-4 stamp. In reverse ,you should get approx 180 psi showing. You can also check C-2 pressure ,as the combination of these two clutches gives you reverse. With no response of hydraulics evident when in reverse, it does sound like you have a bad internal leak at C-4 or your pump is going bad.

This happened all at once. Actually we just bought it. The guy told us he got stuck out in the field and was rocking the tractor back and forth to get out. It has a new hyd. pump. I will check the pressure as you said. Thanks for your help.

nb,
One other remote possibility is the C-4 feeder tube. They don't usually loosen but may have in this instance. It is located on top of the bell housing behind engine. You will see two tubes from control valve to two fittings on bell housing. Directly in front of the fittings are two plugs (7/8" wrench). Remove the right plug. Down in the port is an open center plug. Use an allen wrench to check it for tightness. This plug holds the feeder tube tight and seals it from leaking. Again, if it was installed correctly ,they don't normally loosen.

I bought one of these tractors with powershift problems.i opened the transmmisson and found the bevel ring in the rear clutch-pack had broken and pierced through the piston and damaged the carrier hub. If there is a major leak in a clutch pack hydraulic pressure will go down because the flow divider valve gives priority flow to the transmission.
