Seems like I have blown a head gasket on my 700b diesel. I thought I would call the local Case dealer to get a idea of what they would charge?

They told me that it would be 600.00 for labor. I am assuming that we are just talking about removing one head and replacing a gasket and putting the head on without any service to the head...

Then he told me for them to truck the tractor it would be 150.00 one way that is 5.00 per mile...

I am assuming the case folks just told me these numbers to get rid of a want-to-be farmer who is not going to buy a 100,000 tractor and they do not want to mess with little stuff.

I can understand the shock at the cost for repair. But as a service manager, I can also see a different perspective. Like Pat said, they may be considering a worst case scenario. I've always found it easier to hand someone a smaller invoice than the original estimate, than vice-versa. Your comment about not wanting the business may be just as accurate, though. I have technicians who, because of their training and skills, are paid very high salaries. Doesn't matter if he is then servicing a new rig, or my personal junker, he gets paid the same.

Your concerns make sense to me. There is all too often an obsession with the johnny big rig syndrome in business; agri, or otherwise. In reality a dollar is a dollar, whether it comes from a JBR or a mom and pop size operation. It is too bad you are asking for help from people that are not smart enough to know the value of your patronage and money. Frankly, you should be happy that you have learned how STUPID these folks are without having to shell out big bucks. If you fix that tractor yourself you will know it was done properly. Phil

Do the work yourself, then you will find out if it"s worth 600.00. Go out and buy a late model roll back truck heavy enough to handle your tractor, hire a driver for the truck, and put commerical insurance on the the truck. One more thing , fuel that truck up! I just don"t understand why your local dealer doesn"t hual it in free!
i"am sorry i forgot about the profit motive!

I have hauled a case 730 300 miles (8000 lbs), combines and other tractors across state lines. I rent a gooseneck and own a 1&1/2 ton truck.

I figure it cost me .50 per mile to haul. (based on fuel about 1.25 gal so today it is higher than .50 / mile. NOT 5.00 per mile!!! I can understand some one with a truck, Insurance ect needing 2-3.00 per mile but 5.00 per mile. For that I can hire someone to drive the tractor the 30 miles or haul it myself.

My point is lets say that the shop needs to charge me 100.00 per hour for the labor OK I understand, my question is the time for a head really 6 hours? it will take me 6 hours or more but they are pros.

I'll bet if you look it up in the rate book a case 700b or case 730 head gasket is maybe 2 hours that would mean the dealer charges 300 per hour??? Sounds like lawyer rates to me...

While there could well be some truth to this, it's possible they're thinking of things being really rusted and stuck, taking the better part of 2 days to get things loose, cleaned up and put back together. If you figure a shop rate of $50-60/hr, and that much time into it, I suppose it could go that high. Sure doesn't explain the hauling charges. I'm not defending anyone, but I remember trying to get the head off my 400 a few years ago. It was stuck on the head studs, taking about a week to get things loose before I could finally pull it off. Just another perspective, and I know it doesn't help you at all.

The tractor is running and in good shape, sleeps in the shed.

Your point is well taken, but my point is if I take my car to the shop. I try to work with the guy and pay the fair price for fair work.

I just feel that they do not want my bussiness.

When a person has the skills to do the job themself the $600 does sound like a lot of $. But as others have said, the overhead of running a reputable buisness now-a-days is out of this world: mortgage, taxes, unemployment insurance, liability, building insurrance, health care, shop vehicle license, utilities, wages, fica, etc., etc. Believe me it's not cheap hiring them to work on newer equipment either. I do everything myself I possibly can. Free enterprise...go into buisness yourself...bid the jobs cheaper... We have two buisnesses in the family. Most people don't understand. It's like the only cost to operating a car is in filling the gas tank. Glenn F.

G.R. is right: First ask if the repair is worth the quotes. Next consider fixing it all on your own steam. Manuals, study time, tooling, work area. Find an old retired tractor/engine mechanic in your area and discuss the job.
Another would be to hire a hauler or fifth wheel
trailer to get your beast to the hospital.
Make sure the service manager has a clearly written job statement to refer to when his crack team finally puts a wrench to it. Finally if you feel the quote is too steep just leave the beast in the yard or sell it to the highest offer.
Good luck.
