Another VAC Question

My father and I were at a tractor show this weekend, and looked at a VAC that was for sale. It looked pretty good, but there was one thing that bothered us, the engine block was painted RED. The whole rest of the tractor was painted orange, but just the block was red. The head, valve cover, and oil pan... all orange. It looked to me as if maybe the block had been a transplant from another tractor. When we asked the owner about it he said that it was, as far as he knew, the orignal engine and that was the way it was supposed to be. Was he right or did we do the right thing by walking away?

Can't really tell without seeing it but it could well have been a new shortblock was installed. They often came with a red primer paint. Maybe the owner never bothered to paint it?? I can't think of anything red (Ford, or IH) that would bolt into a VAC, without some serious modifications.

I really didn"t think it was out of a different brand of tractor, maybe just another VAC (or similar) that had been mis-painted over the years.
