A last resort if your magneto dies...

I got tired of buying dead magnetos for my Case DC. I mounted a standard cylindrical 12 volt coil on the engine and I drilled two holes in a spare magneto. Through these I ran a coil wire and the ground wire for the exterior coil. I installed a condensor from my lawn mower in the magneto case. It started on the first try. I have run it several hours cutting weeds. It runs better than it did before. The tractor had been stalling after running about 30 minutes. I generally like to keep my tractors in stock condition, but it is very difficult to get parts for the old Case magnetos.

Having trouble with an I.H. H4 mag and have heard of this trick,On a coil from a car the terminals are marked + or switch and - or contact breaker, what goes where and do you join the H.T. lead in? please get back or e-mail Thanks Richard in England.

Hello Richard, Basicly, the on a negative (-) ground system, you would run a (+) or hot wire from the battery through a toggle switch and out to the (+) terminal of the coil. Run another wire from the (-) terminal of the coil through the body (probably have to drill a hole) of the magneto to the terminal on the point set (also known as breaker set). That same terminal will have a condensor attached to it. Drill a second larger hole in the magneto body if needed for a HT (high tension) wire. You would make this hole a few millimeters wide and remove the boot from the wire to get it through the hole you just drilled. Find a way to attach the HT wire within the distributor cap. You can remove the old coil from the inside of the magneto if you need room. I hope this helps you. Please let me know.

Alton, This is a neat idea. I have a couple of questions. 1) How do you attach the high tension wire from the coil to get power to the rotar? 2) Couldn't you go one step further and use an electronic ignition (Pertronix)in the body of the Mag?? It might even fool ole John Salei, (sorry John, :>) don't hate me!) if you tucked the coil under the hood and drilled the holes in the back side of the mag. What do you think?

That would be great if you could find an electonic ignition system you could insert into the magneto body. You asked how I attached the coil wire to the terminal inside the cap. I just plugged it into the post inside the cap. But, I had to insert a short stripped copper wire inside the post to complete the connection. I am attaching a couple of pictures of what this all looked like after I finished. Alton

If it is the same as a VAC mag then I have one I am looking to get rid of. It came from a running engine when I converted to the dist system of my tractor.
