Hard to start L

Give me some input on this one: I have a "30 model Case L. When it is cold, it will fire off on the 3rd throw on the crank. If I shut the gas off, let it die, then turn the gas back on, try to restart, it will not hit a lick. Doesn"t matter where the spark advance is either. If it sets for about 30 minutes, it will lite right back up on the 3rd or 4th throw. It has good fire, timed right, & I believe the carb is spot on by the way it runs. Just doesn"t like to start hot. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Good stuff on both posts. Yes, I goofed & listed it twice. I actually thought I had arthritis setting in my left elbow, but then it dawned on me one day that it was from cranking on the L! I really appreciate the info, maybe I can heal up now!

I have had similar problems with my Ls and LAs. I found that I can usually overcome it by being aggressive with the choke. What I mean is don't be afraid to use the choke when the engine is hot. There are two problems. First is a large updraft carburetor with a long run in the intake. It is difficult to lift fuel that far on one crank. I believe the second problem is our environmentally friendly gasoline that does not like to vaporize very easily. The stuff starts fine in a new fuel injected engine with an ignition system that puts out a zillion perfectly timed volts, but not too ideal for our old engines. Experiment with the choke, it works for me. The engines are almost impossible to flood while hand cranking, don't hold back. Good luck.

I'm new to the Case L's, but I got a 1930 L a few weeks ago from a guy who knew nothing about it (he was selling it for someone else) so I have had to learn by trial and error and by talking with others. I got to the point where I could sometimes get it to start in 4-8 cranks, but I'm sure it is out of tune in every way. I could get nothing out of it if it stopped, or I stopped it and tried to restart when hot. Last week I went to a big local tractor show (Eastern Shore Thresherman's) and talked to two different Case L owners. Got some hints on how to start it, and a definitive - it never will restart when hot comment. Now at least I can start in 4-6 cranks almost any time I want. Still can't restart a hot engine. I'm hoping that when I get to tuning and adjusting everything it'll get a bit easier.

By the way, my tractor was refitted with the gasoline intake manifold and Zenith carburetor, and later Chase magneto at some point. I've been trying to learn just what was going on when they did those conversions, as many of the Cases I've seen personally or in photos have had this same conversion. It seems that there were problems with what they called the low cost fuel manifold and the Kingston carburetor, and many dealers just did the swap as a matter of course, especially when they took an old Case L in trade for an LA, and had to clean up the L for resale.

Good luck with yours, keep us posted on what happens next.

Unless I plan on leaving the tractor sit for an extended period of time (winter), I always shut my L off by the mag, and leave gas in the carb. I shut the gas off at the tank, and just pull the advance lever until it dies. Then when I go to restart it, I can gnereally have it running by the third pull, regardless of how soon I try to restart it.

Keep a can of starting fluid handy. Give it a shot. She should start right up. Fuel acts funy & boils in a hot carb. Any non-injected motor is hard to start hot. The effect is worse in the summer. Good luck!

Update on my last post
I've used starter fluid on my old Case SC with no problem, but I called Penzoil's tech line & asked them about using it on an older hand crank tractor. Since starting fluid has more power than gas they said it would be risky for an older weaker motor & could cause a harder kickback on the hand crank.
Not a good idea. Sorry

I don't care too much for using starting fluid, especially in these old girls. All I know is, my L will start pretty much every time, regardless of how long it has run or not run previously. I know that my mag is hot, my plug are good, and everything is tuned right. 3 - 4 cranks and it runs.

I agree that shutting fuel off is worst idea. use the mag kill. my dad started his L on 3rd crank after it sat inside for 20 years. we cranked it by hand with the spark plugs out till we had sufficient oil pressure. you know, 5 lbs. then it lit off on 3rd crank. when hot, usually first or second crank. yes, use the choke hot, that is a big intake manifold to fill.

Not trying to argue with you at all, but trying to consider it from another side.

Why is shutting off the fuel to kill one the worst idea?

I very rarely shut mine down any other way. My thinking on it is that right before dying, it will be running very lean and burn the plugs off clean for an easier startup next time.
