I have a 430 that leaks hydraulic oil from the inside of both rockshaft arms. There doesn't appear to be a major seal that would be in these locations, and there isn't any direct hydraulic pressure near . Has anyone got any clues? Thanks.

Yes, there is a seal between the transmission and the rear end, and it's possible that some oil could transfer between the two. However, the seal is ABOVE the oil levels on both sides. Unless there is no seal at all, it would take years to transfer any signifiant amount of oil. As mentioned before, the problem is with the rockshaft piston seal. Unless you have a very late 430 or 470, there is NO return line to take leaking rockshaft piston oil back to the transmission.

Thanks for the reply. So what you are saying that the trans & the rear axle are 2 separate fluid systems & sealed. The hydraulic system uses fluid from the trans & diverts it to the rockshaft piston, which is located in the rear axle housing. Leakage at the rockshaft piston results in the rear axle being overfilled & the trans being low. The I & T manual doesn't show this system very well. Do you know of a better place to get repair info? Thanks again? Is this a difficult repair- the rockshaft piston?

If the transmission is overfilling, the rockshaft return hose can be split open. It conects to a tube at the top of the trany case to dump it back to the torque tube.

Greasing the 2 fittings on the rockshaft housing did seem to stop the oil from leaking. The rear axle was way overfilled & the trans was low. There must be some seals between the 2 units. I am assuming that there is an internal cylinder that moves the rockshaft, and that it must have some leakage causing that oil to have leaked, since it must be close to the inside part of the rockshaft. I am curious as to how hard it would be to split the tractor & replace whatever seals the trans from the rear axle. Thanks for the replies!

Check the oil level in the transmission. The only way oil can come out at the rockshaft arms is if the rockshaft piston is leaking hydraulic oil into the transmission causing it to overfill. If it's overfilled, remove the rockshaft cover and replace the rockshaft piston seal. Drain the oil, and replace it with 90W or 85-140W gear oil no higher than the mark on the dip stick.

There are grease zerts for the rockshaft. One on each side, greasing them should keep the oil on the inside.
