470 PTO question

I was bushhogging today (6') and got stuck in a mudhole for about an hour. Disconnected the hog and finally pulled the 470 out w/ my truck an hour later. Things seemed to get pretty warm for a while on the tractor. I reconnected the hog and started again. Things were going as usual until I hit a little larger patch of weeds. When I hit the larger patches, the PTO virtually stops turning but picks back up in the smaller stuff. It never had done this before and would normally just gobble the weeds up, no matter how thick. What would cause this? Fluid around PTO too hot, or getting low. Or is there a friction pad or clutch on the PTO that may be worn? Thanks for any input. Brad

The PTO clutch is out of adjustment. If you use it too much as it slips, the PTO clutch plates will get too hot and warp. In that event, the clutch plates will need to be replaced. Make sure the tractor is NOT running. There is about a 1 1/2 inch pipe plug on the side of the PTO housing. Remove it. With the PTO disengaged, rotate the PTO until a pin near the plates is visable. Using a fork tool, pull the pin out slightly as you turn the PTO counter clockwise. That will cause the clutch to tighten. Keep adjusting the clutch in this way until it requires about 30 pounds to push the clutch lever into engagement. Good luck.
