I have a 64 930 Case tractor that I can not get to turn over. I had the starter in to get rebuilt as I thought it was the problem and they rebuilt it to the tune of $250.00. Put it on and the starter just clicked. Tried boosting it to no avail. Bought new batteries as the old ones ( 8 years old ) tested weak.Still no go. Took the starter off and put it on another tractor and it is fine. I took the neutral switch and tied the wires together to see if that was the problem and no dice. Only thing left I can think of is the key switch. Connections are fine and clean on batteries, good wire hookup onto the starter. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for all the help. I am currently trying to get at the relay behind the engine. I can see it with a mirror but with a high lift loader frame in place and a cab that extends over the hood by about 6" , it is difficult. We are currently taking the front of the cab apart to pull the hood and get a hand in there. I have another 930 with none of the above attachments ( cab, loader) so I can see where I want to get.

North M. You have a lot of infromation to go at. First of all, Have the batteries tested with a load tester, A bad battery will cause it not to work, even if you jump it. 2 check and see if the motor on the starter motors, go to the hot feed to the motor feed . that will run the motor but not enage the starter. if that works drop the starter and see if you can turn the engine over. Check the back side of the starter and make sure it is not painted ,if it is clean it and retest.

North M , The first thing I would do is take the starter back off and turn the flywheel, checking to see that the engine didn"t seize for some reason and to double check the teeth on the starter drive and on the flywheel. If you have another case starter compare the starter drive( I had a shop rebuild a starter for me and put wrong starter drive on and caused same problem once)I would put starter back on checking all connections and wires. If you have good current from the batteries, you could jump the wires at the solenoid to find out if your problem is in your wiring(Warning If you do this make double sure that tractor is in neutral and the brake is set. Please let us know how you come out Bill

I switched the starter with another one that was working in another tractor so I have eliminated the starter being the problem. New batteries . Will check wiring again. I was wondering about the neutral switch if it would make the starter click or if the neutral switch was no good would it just be silent. Thanks

Any time I had trouble with the safety neutral switches they just didnt let any current through,If you are getting a click, then you are making contact. You will need to double check to see that you are getting full voltage at the soleniod. As another posting stated usually clicking noise means low battery. Do you get only one soild click each time you activate the stater switch and will it do it each time if you try the switch three or four times in a row ?? As I said before if you can jump it at the solenoid and it starts then its in the wiring circuit, About the only thing in the wiring system is the starter switch, breaker, and the safety switch, Good luck Bill

I had an 830 that would click one time and a relay on the hot wire would kick out. After fixing all the things you did, I replaced the relay( like a breaker that will reset itself) and fixed my problem.

Did not know there was a relay to the starter but will track it down. I asume it is under the dash. Thanks.

M, If you are getting multiple clicks as you hold the key on then it is low voltage, whether it be because of bad connections, bad cables, or batteries. If it is just one click when you hold the key over then it could still be those things.
This is a reaaly stupid question, but are you sure the motor didn't seize up?

Hope this helps, jstpa

Bad cables Bad ground, New starter and new Batteries are not squat without a good full circuit.

If the starter is good, ck the batteries. If batteries are good, ck at far end of cables. I like 2/0 cables better than 1/0. Assuming the rest is up to snuff the only thing better than amps to start a tractor is more amps. Phil

I took a set of booster cables and used them in place of the battery cables and again with no gain. The starter just clicks. Connections are clean. Batterys are new 6 volt paired together for a 12 volt rated for the tractor. I even tried jumping the starter but it still clicks. I seem to think it is in the switch or possibility there might be a starter relay under the dash. Thank.s

Case not on the run; When you pulled down the starter a couple months back was there any shimming between the starter unit and the engine mounting area? Some rigs are assembled with .oo5 to .010" in this area. When this feature is not reinstalled it causes a tighly bolted starter shaft to be wedged or bound, just enough to prevent the free wheeling torque from the starter to start the beastly engine. If you can make the starter ring and starter pinion unmesh by .oo5" you can put that beast of burden back to work. Or maybe not.

I had been using the tractor a month ago and aside from the generator not charging the batteries , everything was fine. I do not think it is seized up. It is making one click when I turn the key . I have tryed boosting it with the same results. I had changed some cable ends but will inspect them more closely. Thanks.

Does your tractor have 2 6 volt batteries or 2 12 volts?

Two 6 volts batterys that are negative ground on one with positive post to the negative ground on the other battery and the positive on the second battery to the starter.

I know you said the batteries were new,any possibility of a bad new battery? If one had an internal short,I don't think even aboost will make it work.
