I have an old case 430 diesel that my brother ran dry. I think sediment from the tank entered the fuel system and is preventing the fuel from reaching the engine. I have replaced the fuel filter, but am unaware of the proper sequence of cleaning/rebuilding the fuel pump. Any suggestions? I need help!! Thanks!

OK, first make sure you have a good stream of fuel to the pump, losen a line and check it, if not then check filters and lines until you solve this problem. You should have a bleeder valve on the pump, but if you can't find it just loosten the line and let the fuel flow until you have a good strong stream. Then, tighten it up and losten all four lines to the injectors on the engine, at the injector end, not the pump end. Then crank the engine until you get a spurt of fuel from each injector line on every other revolution. Then tighten the injectors and it should start.

Could it be possible that the pump is clogged with sediment and is not allowing for the fuel to flow freely to the pump itself and the injectors? Doesn"t the pump have an internal filter that may have been clogged?

Miguel,

When the tractor was run out of fuel, air entered the fuel system. The tractor will not start now because the fuel system has air in it and does not self-prime. You need to bleed the system to remove the air and replace it with fuel. I am not familiar with this specific model but most pumps do not have an internal filter, regardless, running out of fuel normally WILL NOT clog your filter(s).

Getting air in the fuel system is a very common problem. Most owner's manuals have a fuel system bleeding procedure that will probably take care of your problem.

Unless you are highly experienced, you should not dismantle a diesel fuel pump other than the simple transfer type pump if your engine has one.

Good luck,

Larry
