48 VAC Hydraulic Pump

I am trying to find a hydraulic pump and have been contacted by two guys who have pumps for my tractor. I am trying to figure out which is the correct one. One mounts between the engine and transmission on the pulley shaft and is operated by cams on the shaft, therefore the clutch must be engaged to operate the pump; the other mounts on the front of the engine and engages the timing gear, so would operate whenever the engine is running and I suppose must have some sort of bypass system. My tractor appears to be setup for use with the rear mount pump, but has a removable cover for the front mount. Does anyone have experience with both who could offer me some advice on this issue?

Thanks.

I replaced my cam pump with a combine pump on my 51 VAC. I use the power steering section for 3-point and the other section for remote cylinder.
Works better than either org. pump. Check archives for combine #'s.

From Case parts manual E61, engine mounted pump:

VTA2972 Hydraulic pump complete with drive gear (engines after A4700000) (1-1/16" drive gear).

VTA2974 Hydraulic pump complete with drive gear (engines before A4700000) (7/8" drive gear).

Pumps are identical except width of drive gear.

A4700000 is an engine serial nr, located on the aft right side of block above the starter. May be just under the cylinder head, kinda hard to spot sometimes.

Well I should have been more careful in reading your post and answered the question you asked.

The mid mount belt pulley gear driven high pressure piston hydraulic pump was used on the '48 and earlier VAC.

The engine driven low pressure hydraulic pump was installed on the model '49 and later VAC. The engine cam gear width was changed in mid '49 thus the different width of the pump drive gear. Your '48 probably has the 7/8" gear, pending the engine serial nr, but I am not sure the pump will retrofit to your engine.

Sorry for the confusion. You need help from someone that knows more about this than I do.

Joe

Thanks for the information. It was helpful. Looks like I need to go with the mid-mount pump which is the replacement of the original equipment. That was my first thought anyway.

Thanks again.

go with the engine mount off the camshaft this gives you live hyd power That way when clutch is pushed in you still have hyd lift If you should ever use a loader you will be grateful I have the same pump with different drive on a dc (Mag drive) with front loader and does job well

I agree that the live pump is, as you say, more desirable as it is live and has 3 times the volume of the belt pully pump BUT it produces less than 1/2 the pressure (900 psi versus 2000 psi) SO the original lift capacity of the midmount lift will be approx. 50% of original. Since Dustin is wanting at this point to return the tractor to original he needs the hi-pressure pump. If he decides that he needs the live pump he could add it later and even run both pumps as separate systems with the addition of a live pump, valve, lines, etc. That way, the hitch would run off of the mid-mount and a loader or whatever would use the live pump. IF the pieces could be found or replicated he could add the live pump and convert the entire setup to a version of the CASE add-on kits shown. ...Or he could use a live pump and obtain an Eagle hitch rockshaft assembly and mount it to the early rear casting as shown on the link. If he chose one of the latter the tractor would still be vintage in that he added a system that was available during the VA Series production run....at least that's the way I see it.
