I need a piston seal for a 1947 VAC hydraulic cylinder. The cylinder is 1.5" inside diameter. The seal consists of a leather cup and a leather plug. Does anyone have a seal or know where I might buy one? I would buy a good cylinder if anyone has one as a good price.

My cylinder was rusted and pitted and allowing fliud to leak past even a new cup. Had a machinist make a plunger, just a few thousands smaller in diameter, than the cylinder and used it to coat the inside of cylinger with J.B. Weld. Used the tractor (49 VAC) all last winter to plow Minnesota snow..No leaks and still holding.

A hydraulics supply house has 'fiber cup seals' for around $6....these outlast the leather originals many, many times over. You can use an 1 1/2" brake wheel cylinder cup in a pinch...they last pretty well depending on how much of a load you're lifting.

Thanks a lot guys, for the fast response, I'll stop by the Case/IH dealer tomorrow. He can get some Case parts. Thanks for the part numbers. that'll speed the process.

This is the hydraulic cylinder for the '47 VAC in Case parts manual E61.

Non-metallic parts are available from Case for about $30.

Material may have been substituted i.e. cup may not be leather.

Confirm all with Case dealer.

Part nr cross ref:

Cup, packing...VT4107 = A30544
Washer, packing...VT4108 = A30545
Washer, felt...VT4109 = A30546

Bob. You can still go to CASEIH and get one, but you have to go to an original CASE dealer, not a CASEIH dealer who sold IH, as they usually don't want to spend the time to cross the number 20 times. They replace the leather with neoprene, and they sell it in a kit which runs you about $75.00. The kit gives you new snap rings, orings, piston seal, and some other parts.
