AS YOU CAN SEE I'M NEW AT THIS MY DAD SAID FIX IT, YOU'LL LEARN SOMETHING RIGHT. HERE'S A DUMB QUESTION I KNOW THE FIRING ORDER IS 1-3-4-2. BUT CAN'T FIND ANYTHING AS TO # ONE CYL IS? OR ANYTHING AS TO WHERE # ONE IS ON THE DIS CAP? IS # ONE CYL THE FIRST CYL BY THE WATER PUMP. ANY HELP SO DAD WON'T LAUGH AT ME. I LOOKED ALL OVER THE WEB AND CAME HERE. LOST IN MIDDLE AMERICA LIMA,OHIO

#1 is the front most cylinder you were correct. To find the #1 on the distributor:

Remove distributor cap so you can see the rotor (it probably looks like a black plastic top hat with an arm off one side that has a metal tip)


Make sure trans is in neutral and wheels blocked

Remove the spark plugs

Hold your finger over the Number one spark plug hole while you turn the engine over slowly (you can probably do it pulling on the fan belt)
You will at some point feel the pressure build under your finger when the pressure stops increasing look at where the arm of the rotor is pointing...that will be the location of number one on the distributor. Note the rotation of the rotor and you can then figure out the subequent cylinders from the firing order

THANKS GOING TO GIVE IT A TRY. I FIXED RIDING MOWERS BEFORE. AND JUST GOT MY OLD PONTIAC RUNNING AS SO I COULD DRIVE IT. OLD DAD SAID BEFORE I CAN DRIVE FIX IT, SO WHEN YOU BRAKE DOWN YOU'LL KNOW IT WORKS.
