580ck locking differential seals between shafts ?

Pulled the brakes off my 580ck today in preparation for installing new ones. Left side parts looked like they might have gotten a little leakage from the differential. However the right hand (with differential lock) side ones were totally soaked ! I'd already prepared by purchasing new carrier seals, but then I got to thinking that there is also the possibility of leakage between the two splined shafts on the side that has the differential lock. How do I determine if those seals are leaking, or only the one that fits into the carrier ? Is there a way to replace those seals between the shafts without doing a major disassembly ? Help !

I don't know of any GOOD way to replace that diff. lock seal without disassembly, but it can be done. What I've done before is clean out the area real good with brake cleaner, find a piece of thin pipe the same OD as the seal, drive the old seal in a little further to make room for the new seal, grease the new seal real good and install it on top of the old seal. Be careful not to drive the new seal in too far as the lip sticks inward further than the metal part, and you don't want to smash the lip up against the old seal. I've managed to get the old seal out a couple times with a seal pick, but it isn't easy and there's no way to know if you've scratched the shaft. I've put the new seal in on top of the old one this way a couple times and never had a problem.

Jim, Interesting, thanks for the response. I contacted the (very helpful) parts guy at my local CASE dealer who sold me the brake parts for my backhoe. He checked with his shop foreman, and was told that the old seal can be removed with a pick (the same as you mentioned). His foreman strongly recommended installing TWO seals if there was adequate room.

Thanks again for your response. It's information like yours that helps by providing tips and tricks that are NOT in the shop manual.
