Anyone bush hog with a DC?

I'm thinking about a bush hog for my DC. It has Eagle hitch and remote hyd. Problem is to be a CAT hitch the top link needs to be where the PTO shaft is. I can get around this OK but the drive shaft angle will be fairly steep. Would rather avoid the whole problem by getting a 6 or 7 foot 2 spindle pull type. It will not be as manuverable but will do what I want it to do. What's your experience bush hogging with a DC?

Hey JDB: I Bush-Hog with both my '53DC & '53SC. I use the top link mounting thats up on the top of the PTO Housing. It won't pick as high as if I was using the PTO Cover Top Link Mounting, but I don't mind. The PTO Drive-line angle is no problem.

I don't know if this is any help, but I use a 5ft. pull type bush hog behind my SC. One advantage to the pull type over the 3-point hitch type is that it follows the ground contours a lot better if your ground is uneven. Make sure you buy a PTO overrun clutch if you don't have live PTO. I also have a 3-point hitch Vicon disc mower that I use on the SC. The PTO angle is not a problem, but my 3-point hitch is fabricated.

I prefer the control and manuverability of a mounted cutter, but then I am not as skilled as some in backing a pull type machine. The PTO angle has been a problem ever since the DC was built. They always have run on a frightening angle but as long as you keep your U-joints greased, the PTO works fine. I agree with John, use the high hook for the top link. think you'll be happy.

Is an overrun clutch the same thing I call a slip-clutch? I pull a 5 ft. drag mower behind my 48 S (not live PTO) and have had good luck with it. It has a shear pin, but no slip clutch.

The overrun clutch is different than a slip clutch, it slides on the PTO shaft and looks like an extension, but has a mechanism that allows it to free-wheel when you stop the tractor or pull the clutch to shift gears. It works like a ratchet on a socket set. You can purchase them at any implemment dealer. They sure save on gear grinding if you stop and shift into reverse often.

The overrun clutch can save your life.
Without one the brushog can push you into a ditch.
