Another friendly fella emailed me and asked about his L Case. The question got me wondering also. Do all C's and L's make that growl noise in the drive train? I have always wondered if tightening the drive chains would help or not? Or could it be just from the straight cut gears that were used. I have always thought it may be normal?

Our '51DC didn't make that noise till it was about 25 years old and probably had 10,000-15,000 hours on it. Now 30 years later it still make that growl but continues to function just fine. We never looked into it.

My dad bought a new DC in 1951, and though I was only 5 years old, it seemed like it growled a bit from day one, especially in road gear. But as I grew older, and so did the tractor, I think we both started growling more :>) Good news is that at 50+ we're both still running.

When I was a 95-pound kid, pulling a rotary hoe with Dad's SC left me growling at the end of the day. It took quite a bit of speed to make it work right, and the seat spring was calibrated for an adult male. I had to stand, spring my knees, and hang onto the steering wheel for dear life. I think my feet were off the foot pans half the time; it was like riding a runaway horse.

Every L and LA that I have had in the last 40 years growls... It is the nature of the beast. The way they cut the gears back then has a lot to do with it.
