Ok, we have a 1955 Case 400 Diesel. I researched for MONTHS and I found that to be a fact; after I found out the serial number was stamped in the flange of the block. Our tractor was missing the data plate. But...my husband is arguing with me that the tractor is a 411 B. Could someone tell me what are some specific differences, or are there really serious differences besides wide front end or something like that. The reason he argues with me is because when we got the tractor, it had NO fuel pump or a starter, and when I found those things Joe was the one to go get them and he says the tractor he got them from was a 411B by the data plate. So could you all help me out here...Please!! LOL, Thanks!!!

The 411B was built 1958 & 1959 only. Square nose with headlights in the grill cap. Front of the booster is squared off.

This one is gas but the sheet metal is the same in overall appearance.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!! For the information!!! I didnt realize the 411B was so much smaller. Right now he's working on getting this one to start on its own, he has a friend of ours testing and cleaning the injectors right now, and hopefully the most of them are still good. Right now it will start and run, but the engine is weak. And it takes starting fluid to get it going which I know is is a big "no no" for a diesel engine. But we're getting there. Thanks Again!!
Tammy

Just go easy with starting fluid. In the 50's some of the Case diesels came with a can of starting fluid factory installed.

(These old engines do not have glow plugs!!! do not use starting fluid on glow plugs)

Starting fluid is like perfume all you need is a little bit.

I have used starting fluid all my life and my 1958 Case 700b Has been known to take a nip now and again.

Here's a simple way to tell; if the tractor is a '400' 1st series, it will have an 8-speed transmission. If the tractor is a '411B', it will have a four speed (plus Reverse) gearbox and it will have Case-O-Matic drive. Another obvious difference can be observed in the cylinder head on the engine. The '400' first series will have two seperate heads (one head for cyl's 1 & 2, and one for 3 & 4). A '411B' would have only one cylinder head across the top of the block.

If your tractor is a 1955 it is not a 411B, they didn't come out until 1958. Also the 400 is a large tractor with 38 inch rear wheels, like the later 800 and 700 Case tractors that came out in 1958. The 411B is small, on the order of a AC-WD, or a Ford of that eara.
