I am about to cut my own cork-rubber gaskets for the hand hole covers on my DC, and I was wondering what some of you have discovered is the best way to cut them out. Do you just use an exacto-knife and go slowly and carefully along the lines? And how do you cut bolt holes? I have 5/16" holes to cut, and someone suggested I use a roll pin sharpened on one end. Any other tips and suggestions? As always, thanks in advance.

I always use a bead of silcon and then lay some string in it. With it string ends over lapping at the top. The string help to keep you from crushing out all the silcon.

Work for me.

I agree with Tom, cept red silicone almost perfectly matches flambeau red, use it as a replacement for every gasket on our puller including the head gasket, much better than paper/cork. mEl

Skizzers, X-Acto knife and a hole punch made from a sharpened length of copper or brass tubing of the correct outside diameter. Oh yes, and carbon paper.

Don't go to the bother of making gaskets. Just use RTV Black silicone. It will hold better and longer than gaskets.

Depending on what kind of material you are using, you can use an exacto knife or scissors to cut your pattern. Personally, I was taught to use a ball peen hammer, and beat out the edges, and use a punch for the bolt holes. You can't always hammer out cork gaskets, as they like to crumble, but it's good for other materials.

For what it's worth I have better luck cutting cork with scissors and a hollow punch for the bolt holes.

If you want to use the cork, (the advice on silicone is correct. It does work well,IF the surfaces are not oily.) The first thing is to get cork that isn't dried out. This maybe is the most important thing to know about using cork/ or composition gasket material. A lot of what you may get has been setting for a long time and will crumble or break if you bend it much. This stuff is useless. So you get some with a little pliability. lay it on the surface to be sealed, and you may use your thumb and run around the edges, this will make a line you may then cut.
you may also take a 4oz. ball peen hammer and push in on the bolt holes while rotating it, this willl cut them out if you do it correctly AND the holes are fairly sharp around the edge. At the least they will be darn well marked. Maybe this helps.
