A retiring farmer has lined me up with a free IH46 baler that needs new needles if I buy the $400 MF mower and $450 rake. Does my VA have what it takes to handle this? We've bought 15 acres of fields with gently sloped hills. Need equipment or pay an arm and leg to have it cut and bales for us. What do you think?

The NH baler that I baled with had a clutch.
I have not square baled with my VAC but I thank it would be OK if I didn't get in a hurry.
I mow with a 9' but it is a lot easer with live PTO.

It'll work only if you can figure out how to go downhill all the time. The VA simply doesn't have the weight/power to be safe pulling a baler and wagon load of bales... maybe if you put them on the ground.

Because there aren't too many acres of hay, I don't have a problem with leaving behind the wagon. I could drop off the baler when finished and go back for the bales with the wagon. Just takes a little longer, but still manageable, right?

I baled for years with my dad's VAC and a NH Super 66 baler with Wisconsin motor on it. It will pull the baler, without wagon attached, about anywhere.

When I was a kid we had a VAO that didn't have live power and it did work on a New Holland 66 baler, but it wasn't pretty. The VAO did not have live power, so if you plugged up the baler or fed it too fast and you put in the clutch it would instantly stop and really plug it up. That meant you had to be very careful when baling. Does your IH have a flywheel and clutch mechanism? I believe the early IH balers did not and they were hard on tractor PTO shafts and clutches. Raking would be no problem and that is what the VAO was good at.

We have an IH 46 baler which we pulled for years with our '51 DC. In heavy hay with our 7" John Deere hay mower I wouldn't have wanted any smaller tractor. Glenn F.

Is the IH baler PTO driven or does it have a motor? I don't know how much horsepower it takes to run that baler? My guess is that it will run it even if it is PTO driven. Make sure you buy one of those PTO over run clutches for the tractor. It should pull the rake in 3rd. gear without a problem. It should run the mower fine as long as you can get everything (PTO shaft and 3pt.)to hook up.
