CASE 630 WON'T GO INTO REVERSE

Hi All,
I posted this message last week, but it is no longer on the website (did I say something wrong to the gentleman who was trying to help me out?? If so, that was the furthest thing from my intentions).
My CASE 630 will no longer go into reverse. All other gears are 100% fine. I opened up the gearbox and nothing looks bent with respect to the forks. There were 3 forks, 2 exactly the same size (it seemed). These did not have a mark on them. The third fork is a bit longer and smaller at the forks themselves. On the tip of one fork, it looks to not be damaged at all. The other tip has a little bit of wear (maybe from a bit of grinding?). Physically, I'd say the tips are still symetrical in size. I also checked for filings in the fluid with a magnet and found nothing. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks for all the ideas! I think that definitely this is the right track. In 'playing' with the shift forks and gears, I can sometimes emulate the same problem with other gears when I am not 100% careful to re-align them. I have had no luck getting the reverse/S fork back into its grove properly yet. I suspect that it is slightly bent...?

OK, so you got the cover off. Is the cover shifting properly off of the transmission?? Did you reach inside and put it in reverse with your hand to make sure the gears will go into full mesh??

Iwould say that if your fork looks good it can only be your reverse gear, that gear has a brass bushing in the middle and right now it may be worn. That gear is on its own on a little shaft at the bottom hope this can help .

I've had this happen on a dozer. I turned out that the fork for reverse had slipped out of the grove in the reverse gear. To fix it, I had to find out what forks where suppose to go into what grooves. I found that out by "shifing" while the shift lever and forks are out of the tractor. Shift the lever to reverse and see which fork moves. That will tell you which fork actuates the reverse gear. Then, put the shift lever in nuetral and make sure that the forks all fit into their respective gear groove when you reistall the shifter and forks.

That did it for me. One thing I remember was it was difficult to get the forks into the grooves because I was on an incline and the gears wanted to gravitate downward, which put them into gear with the transmission. Its much easier when the tracor is on the level.
