310b - Brakes

HI,
I just pickup a case 310b. It all seems to work
but it needs a lot of brake work. There is nothing on the left side and the right side doesnt really stop anything. It just adds a "little rolling resistance":-) which just shortens the stopping distance.

Does anyone have any expericence in doing a brake job? What is ahead of me? Where do I start?

Al

I think it should be a ramp-ball type disc brake. The steel balls in the brakes are probably rusted and not coming out of their pockets. The discs can be relined or I think you can still get them from Case/IH. I've been replacing the steel balls with stainless steel ones. I get them from McMaster Carr. I believe they are made of Type 440-C (high carbon) stainless? They are almost as hard as the originals.

Thanks for the info. I have talked with the local case dealer and they say that the manuals are on order but have not come in yet. As soon as they get here I will start on the brakes.

Thanks for the encourgement.

How easy is it to get to the brake discs? Will I need any special equipment.
Al

No, you shouldn't need any special tools unless the discs are rusted to the splined shaft and won't slide off.

oh-no
"rusted to the spline shaft"??

I'm guessing
that we are not talking about disc brakes like a car
where you just replace the pads.

Do the big wheels need to come off?
Do I need to drain any oil reserves?
Do I need gaskets or gaskets kits to seal everything up again?

Suppose I just drop the hoe or a stabilizer or two when I need to stop:-)

The brake disc looks similar to a clutch disc, only smaller. No, you don't need to drain any oil nor do you need any gaskets. No, you don't need to remove the wheels, just remove the brake cover.

Thanks for the info. My manuals came today.
Now I see what you are talking about.
Soon I will have to take a wrench to the tractor and see what kind of problem I have.

If I assumme the worst, are the parts, balls springs
plates etc available.

The dealer in Flagstaff has been so nice I dont want to bother him until I have the list of parts I need. Its a good working relationship and I think I may need that in the future.

Does that 310b with backhoe have any known weak spots?

You know, things I should just plan on fixing or things that I should be careful of and not break.

If the dealer doesn't have the parts, email me and I will try to help you find them.

Sorry can't help with your questions but on the alternate braking methods:

NO! NO! NO! don't drop the hoe or the stablizer. You might break something. The proper procedure is to drag one foot.
