I have a VAC that seems to have a one piece shifter/knob. How do I get a rubber boot on it to keep the water out of the transmission?

All I've seen the ball is screwed on shifter. Thread is 3/8"-16. The non-metallic part of the ball becomes brittle over the years and can be easily broken. Might try a strap wrench. If you break the ball there will be metal core left on the shifter. That can best be unthreaded with a small pipe wrench as opposed to vicegrips.

If you want to stretch the boot over the ball, I've heard that rubbing alcohol is great, haven't tried it though.

Boot is VT2017 later nr A26956
Ball is O3501AB later nr A26727

Hey cornfused, I pulled the shifter ball on my Vac, the thread size is 3/8 nf. Tpi is 24 not 16.

Having trouble getting my brain cells up to speed today (both of them).

Thanks Joe, I did get mine to move a little but it sure is tight. I may wait until I have the boot and knob before destroying it!

If you don't/can't want to remove the knob try soaking the new dust cover in DOT 3 brake fluid..leave it in the sun to soak,,,warmer is better. For some reason brake fluid makes the rubber more stretchy and it lubricates it. Haven't tried it on a shifter boot but it works on the clutch and brake pedal rubber draft pads on a M-37 truck
