Had a over heating problem with my DC and found out the trouble when over hauling last winter. #4 cylinder was 1"from the top full of crud, #3 was 2", and 1 and 2 were half way up. This is probably not what you want to here but if this is your problem you'll have to tear it down. While I was at it I had radiator rodded not bolied due to the fact I would probably have to replace the old core. Also replaced the water pump because impeller was rusted to almost nothing. As DC tom told me they should've had a freeze plug in the fromt and back of the block for flushing it. Dave S.

2 things come to mind. Timing may be off somewhat. They will run just fine but get mighty hot. Or the cooling system is plugged up. I have seen gunk all the way up to the top of the sleeves basically shutting off the coolant flow.

I had a heating problem with my '52 also. I got the backing strips from the back side of a windshield wiper blade which is 1/16" x 1/4" x about 26" long. I pushed this strip down every radiator tube I could reach through the radiator cap hole. I got through most of them. Do not use too much force. Mice like to build nests in old engines. I picked fuz out of my '51 for months and had to do the same process on it before it quit plugging up. You may need to flush the radiator and the block.
