I just bought a Ford 451 3x16 roll-over plow to use on my 830 which is on LP. This is a big plow and after looking at my tractor, the plow (I've not picked it up yet) looks awfully big. Is the 830 capable of pulling such a plow in a fairly sandy sand loam? If it's not, I'll try to buy the smaller 3x16 the fellow has...thanks for any input!

You are asking 2 questions.

"This is a big plow and after looking at my tractor, the plow (I've not picked it up yet) looks awfully big."

1. Yes the 830 can pick up the plow.

"Is the 830 capable of pulling such a plow in a fairly sandy sand loam? If it's not, I'll try to buy the smaller 3x16"

2. Yes the 830 will pull a 3X 16, but just because a plow is a lighter does not mean it will pull better (if they are the same size). However some plows like the old Oliver/ Case plows did pull better that others. I really do not know about ford.

3. If I had to pick a roll over plow vs. regular one way I would take the roll over. They sure are nice to use, but just because there is more iron on top does not mean it going to cut down more or throw any more dirt. A 3X16 is a 3X16.

I was probably more concerned about the tractor picking up the plow than anything else. I'm sure it'll pull the plow with ease through this soil. I need to plow as deep as I can to bust up a hardpan that I've not been able to get rid of with a sub-soiler. I thank you for your input.

I had a chance to buy a 5x16 roll-over, but that looked like a train behind the guys tractor..... I'll go with the 3x16!

Yours is a very subjective question. Soil types vary TREMENDOUSLY! Glenn F.

Yes, it is subjective, but the soil is sandy. In fact, where the soil has washed across the road, it looks like the white sands of the beaches. I'm in south AL, with no red clay. it's mostly sand!

Where in South AL? Send me your e-mail. I am in south Al also and if you need any help setting up to handle the plow let me know.
