This is my first tractor. As usual, found is field abandoned for at least three years. At any rate, This is also my first Diesel, after ten years as full time Auto Mechanic. I have factory owners manuel, but it does'nt give horsepower specs. Also what is Drawbar power as opposed to engine power. I can't find a water pump seal for this and don't care to pay $85-$100 when all I need is the seal. I also have the screens that go over the grill, Someone seemed eager to by them, are the rare to find....they appear to be factory. sorry so long, I've been online for a week now and I'm still new at it. If it helps the model number is #8082005
Thanks, Chris

Hey 401 guys, I have a 401 serial no. 8106749 I've been told it's a Super 400, it has Super on the hood. I would like to fix the tractor up, it not running now. Chris do you have a extra screen for the grill? If so I could use one e-mail me. Patrick can I get everything to over haul the engine? Ronnie

Ronnie, The reason I said screens is that there are two, each covers only half of the grill. They snap on to the grill pretty hard, it seems they would tear up a new paint job. Also, one of mine is damaged, has hole and rusting away, no surprise there being where I found the tractor. Mine must be just a regular 400 series, I wonder of they're all diesels? Thanks to all who respond to my inquiries, I got nothing for a couple of days and thought no one cared, thanks again,Chris

Ronnie;
Yeah, you can still get rebuild kits for that engine. That one has a 4 1/8 inch bore as opposed to the 4 inch used on the non-super 400. They also used this engine on the 700B and 800B and I think the early 730 (I think cylinder heads were slightly redesigned on the 730. From pictures I've seen they changed the angle the powr-cels were mounted in the head compared to the earlier ones.) Crankshaft and connecting rod bearings are the same according to the parts book. Look for a rebuild kit that says it is for the 267cid engine. Looks like from the parts book, differences between 400 and super 400 is bigger bore diameter, slightly advanced fuel pump timing, increased rpms from 1600 to 1635, and the addition of a pto brake to stop pto shaft when not in use. Let me know how you like that, on mine, if it's cold out, you have to shut off the engine to hook up a pto shaft or you get your hands twisted off.

Hope this helps,
Pat

Thanks, It's nice to talk to someone that has the same tractor. I've been putting my tractor on hold because, I like to have the parts or no I can get the parts before I start. I live at Tipton, Mo.. Do you know of a salvage yard with a lot of 400's? Need some of the sheet metal and other goody's.

Ronnie;

Try Ed Goodrich, Jr. Rte 38 & 38B
Newark Valley, NY 13811
(607)-642-3293

This is from an ad in "Old Abe's News", spring '97. He says he has parts for the hundred series tractors, some Case crawlers and backhoes.
Good luck

Pat

Chris;
Case 401 was listed at 49pto and 44 drawbar HP. If you've got a decent bearing shop/retailer around, you might be able to match the seal if there is an oem number stamped onit that can still be read. The Case part number for that seal is 09799AB. THis is their old number-a Case dealer should be able to cross it to their new numbers and tell you if it is still available.

Your 401 was made in 1956 and is a close brother to mine. Dad bought ours brand new in 57 and we've been using it ever since. I've been working on getting it cherry again for the past 4 or 5 years. If you need any more help (if this has been help)don't be afraid to e-mail me.

Pat

ANY information is a help. This weekend my wife is dragging me to Sikeston, Mo. I didn't want to go however I have learned there is a tractor salvage yard or two there so it may not be too bad. I don't know of any here where I live in Granite City,IL(St. Louis area). It may be a good trip after all. Again, Thank you for the info.
Chris
