Unfortunately the is no easy way if one at all to convert to 540 rpm. It would probably be cheaper to buy a 2290 that has the dual pto option than figure a way to get 540 out of the 1270. I bet if someone did figure a relatively cheap and easy way to convert the 70 series he could make a bundle o' money!

I've been thinking of this ever since we bought our 1370.

I think the consensus is that a gear reduction is the best way to go. I've been told frequently that it's not good to let these engines idle (or run at a slow speed) for a long time. This implies that a simple shaft adapter, to go from 1000 rpm shaft splines to 540 splines, and running the engine slower, would not be good for the engine.

One of these days I'll dig up some gears from a transmission or something, and make an adapter. It's not quite as simple as just reducing the speed - the direction has to stay the same as well (a planetary set would be great!). Anyone got a set of gears (approximately 2:1 ratio) laying around???

For some reason all the new forage blowers (silo fillers) are made with big 60" fans that run 540. Some of them offer an option for a gearbox to run it with a 1000 rpm shaft. (Badger and hesston for sure gehl too i think) You would have to adapt it to your implement. Our hesston only gears 1000 rpm's down to 640 but it works. New holland doesn't make their "30" or "40" 1000 rpm blowers any more. I can't figure it out because now virtually all tractors have 1000 pto.A 540 pto shaft is ony supposed to transmit 85hp mabey up to 100.We can use 150hp on the hesston and with corn silage you can bring our 180hp 2390 to its knees.(If you put 225hp on it you can really blow stuff but the tripple #80 roller chain reduction gets pretty hot.) Most of the time we use a new holland 30 for corn silage and the hestton for rye and alfalfa haylage.

Sad to hear NH doesn't make any 1000 rpm blowers any more. We have a #40 and it will take anything you throw at it, traded in a 540 rpm after using the #40 for one day and unloading twice as fast without plugging up once. By the way, unless you have the 2390 turned up it is only 160 horse.

Ive seen th 2390 as high as 190 on the dyno but in warm weather it will lose 10 or more hp. Havn't messed with the pump since we bought it used 13 or 14 years ago. The hesston with a 16" auger will out do a 40 newholland but it takes more power.(tip speed roughly the same) and a 30 nh will blow just as much corn silage as the 40 with less power and without tearing apart distributers. We unload 12 ton in about 4 min.

That is the thing about Case tractors, I think the line foreman said make sure they are at least their rated horse... as most seem to be over. So a 2390 should be 160 but 180 isn't out of the question, small miscommunication there. We quit using distributers years ago. Just blow it in and level it off when full, beats going up there several times to check and/or fix the darned things! Hate to have one fall over due to a distributer not working. Not really sure how fast we unload, never really thought about it but we can fill a 20'x80' in three days.

What in the world are you chopping with! That is extremely fast. Must not be using wagons either?
