I will be picking up my 300 this weekend. When I drove it from the purchace location to friends house, I noticed there was a brand new battery, and when driving, the guage showed a discharge when running.

In the event I need to jumpstart it from my 12 volt truck, how do I do it?

Thanks

I have jumped a 6 v with 12 v many times. I start cranking the tractor over on 6 v and then hook the 12v up and as soon as it starts take the jumpers off.

Bob, The best bet is to do as todd stated, Dont ever hook 12v to a 6 volt battery. The only other way to jump this tractor with 12 volt would be take the starter cable off and use the booster cables directly onto the starter. BUT WOULD NOT ADVICE THIS. Please just spend the moeny on another new 6 volt battery and take it with you. You can use the new 6 volt battery on your next case tractor you buy. Bill

You can jump your 6 volt tractor with a 12 volt source as long as you connect + to + and - to - regardless of positive/negative ground designation on either vehicle.

It is recommended that you have your source ground jumper not hooked to the source battery ground, but to the chassis and remove it first when breaking up the circuit.

I've done this many times and really this is all you are doing when you use your battery charger on high boost.

UNDER NO CONDITIONS CAN YOU JUMP a 12 volt battery with a 6 volt source!

NEVER connect a 12 volt battery to a 6 volt battery. The 6 volt battery plates will not handle the 12 volt load and will overheat. Battery explosion is very probable in this configuration. To be safe take a spare, charged 6 volt battery with you or use only a 6 volt charger to recharge the battery that is in the tractor now. Others on the board will tell you that it is possible to start the tractor with 12 volts and that is true. However, your 6 volt battery and generator must be completely disconnected to avoid damage, explosion, injury, etc. Spend the money for a 6 volt battery charger - it will be the best insurance you can get to avoid a possible tragedy.

I agree with Todd - buy a charger that has both 6/12 volt charger settings. Chances are good you will be needing one down the road anyway, so getting one now is logical. If they have a new battery in the tractor and it is discharging be ready for some electrical system tuning. That was obviously a short term "band-aid" by the seller.

Thanks to all for the advise. I will buy a battery and charger for the 6 volt system.

I agree about the band-aid. Sorry he could not been upfront with me, would have paid same money for tractor. Will start hunting for short or whatever, which I am really bad at, next weekend.

Thanks for taking my advice. I just do not want to see anyone get hurt. For clarification, I am an electronics service engineer with over twenty years of experience. I graduated from technical school with honors and I currently service x-ray equipment. Although I have never worked in commercial broadcasting, I also earned the FCC General Class Radiotelephone License (this class replaced the older 1st and 2nd licenses starting in 1982) while in technical school. It did earn an A+ in radio theory, as I recall.

Bob; I would also check and see if the battery was hooked up with the positive ground configuration, lot of people will put on negative ground that aren't familiar with these older tractors.
