Gene,

I did get my 701 home a couple weeks ago. I need to get an owners manual - but until then, can you give me a little help?

To change the oil, I know I need 9 quarts. What weight do you run?

The filter housing was gunked up a little - it came apart fast with a mallet, but I did not see exactly where the two washers came from. Do they both go under the filter? Soft rubber one on the bottom?

As soon as I get my hands on a digital camera, I'll post a picture.

Thanks!

Tim in NY
(with no longer abandoned 700 Diesel)

Hi Tim; I may get flamed for what I am about to say here. I use diesel series, multi-grade oil in everything I have, lawnmowers included. Using the recommendations from the original manual is using the technology frow 40 or 50 years ago. Had 15 w 40 oil been available when the 700 diesel was built, I am sure that would have been the recommendation for most areas. The only use I have for non-detergent oil is my pump oil can. Gear and hydraulic oils are the same. 85 w 90 in the gear transmissions and rear drives. Universal hydraulic oil works great in the hydraulic housing for most uses. If you use the PTO a lot for heavy loads, type F transmission fluid works well as it has a little higher friction component. The power steering seems to do fine on the Wally World power steering fluid at $1.49 a quart and it foams less than ATF.
The rubber washer goes between the filter and filter housing. the steel washer should remain on the spring in the top of the housing, but sometimes becomes detached, but all it does is hold pressure on the element to seal the bottom. The sludge is common in the bottom of the housing as this is not a full flow filter and only filters a small portion of the oil that is bypassed back to the oil pan.
Oil have 5 functions. It lubricates, cools, transmits pressure, cleans and prevents corrosion. Additives are added to give the properties for the specific application. Detergnt oil removes the sludge forming contaminates from the engine that cause sludge and keeps it in suspension and is removed when the oil is drained. The viscosity is maintained by viscosity improvers that keeps the oil at a near constant thickness. Synthetic oils generally don't work well in diesel engines as they have less scavenging ability to remove the soot from the fuel residue.
This is a subject that may have a lot of different opinions so I will now put on my Nomex suit for the responses... Gene

Hey Gene: Can I chime in now? I use 85W140 for gear oil. What are your thoughts on that? In gear drive tractors where Hyd.-Trans Fluid is recommonded, such as the Comfort King Tractors, I even add 85W140 to the thinner oil to give it more body. Probably 1Qt. of 85W140 to 3Qts. of the thinner fluid.

John; I would definitely recommend the heavier gear oil for a working tractor, but only in multi-grade such as 85w140. I grew up with Farmalls with straight 140 gear oil. In cold weather it was so stiff that the tractor had to run for several minutes for the oil to warm up enough to get it into gear. Bound to be some parts that don't get lubricated as soon as they should... Gene

Hey Gene: You & I are on the same wave-length. What is your favorite brand? I avoid Penzoil & Quakerstate. When my Dad was selling CASE, years ago, he also sold Pennzoil. The CASE Blockman told him he was selling the poorest oil on the market.

I use Shell Rotella 15-W-40in all my tractors, trucks and lawnmowers. I use Aeroshell 15-W-50 in my airplane. My fuel and oil distributor handles Shell and also Tractor Supply in town... Gene

Hey Gene: No argument here. For all my years I used Sun Oil Lubricants. Several years ago Sun got out of the Lubricant business and sold their Formulas to Union 76. My Distributor now sells that to me. Never had a bottom end failure, or any oil related failure.

OK - don't laugh please. Just to verify, the oil fill is right in front of the injector pump, correct? Seems like an odd location, but I don't see any other place for it to go.

Thanks!

Tim

Hey Tim: Correct. Engine oil goes in just ahead of the pump, by removing the cast, threaded cap.

Thanks for your advice. Appreciate the info on the other lubes too, as I also need to change those before I try to fire her up.

You can bet I'll keep in touch, I'm sure I'll have bunch more questions.

Tim

Hey Tim: Run 15W40 approved for Diesel use. Shell, Chevron, Union 76 are 3 good ones that come to mind.
