I changed to an alternator on my '56 model 310. Used a GM single wire alternator. No changes to any of the wiring, since the alt. goes direct to the battery. I later added an ammeter. Starter is still the 6 volt unit. 12 volts won't hurt it. It just draws half the current on 12 v.

You're right about suggesting the GM alternator. It's the best choice (single wire hookup). A 6 volt starter will draw a little more current on 12 volts but will spin twice as fast.

Use a one wire self exciting alternator, it goes straght to the battery to charge it. I am sure you could wire up the ammeter or voltmeter to work also.

I put a older Ford Alt with external Reg. on my 800, 830 & 930 all bolted right up with only a slight modification to the original Gen mounting shaft. Had to change the pulley to a Ford twin v-belt kind for the Power Steering belt. The Wiring came from the scrap Ford Harness. Simply had to un-tape and pull out the wires that were part of the charging circuit, cut-em, splice-em to the right lengths and re-tape. Mounted the regulator onto the Case bracket that supports the front of the fuel tank on the 800 & 830. Amp meter still works normally.

I put an alt. & external regulator off a 196? Buick on my 830. Took it to our local alt. repairman and he showed me what wires to connect. It's easier to install an alt. with an internal regulator.
