I've got a '52 SC that I recently bought from the original owner. It sat in a pasture in Nevada for 12 yrs, but started on the second turn. My problem is that it keeps fouling plugs. It has a mag on it and the mag seems very strong. I had the carb rebuilt by Denny's Carb Shop but that didn't change anything. I cleaned the air breather assembly also. I'm using Champion J8C plugs. The SC runs OK when warm, but if anything is a little short on power. It requires choke to run when first started, even in warm weather. Could it have loaded up valves or blow-by at the valve seats? Other ideas? Thanks for your help.

It sounds like it is burning two rich it wierd that you say it doesn't smoke. Did you check the air side. The air breather the venture make sure that the carb is getting enough air to mix with the gas. Just because denny did your carb doesn't mean thatit is right for your tractor. Check the main fuel jet sometimes people drill it out for bigger cubes, so maybe it is to big and you cannot control it with the adjustment.just my 2 cents.

The tractor could be a little out of time. May want to try turning the mag a little. The best way to get it right and maximum power is adjusting it while pulling plows or something. The coil in the mag could be weak. It may get worse as it gets heat off the engine. Is the spark still blue with the engine hot?

I think your mag may be weak or your gap is too narrow. Your spark should be a very pretty blue when it jumps the gap. A yellow hue to the spark would indicate that it is weak or "cold." Try opening the gap on the plugs and points a little. I have a distributor on my SC and the engine needs overhauled bad. It burns a quart about every two hours and it never fouls the plugs. The same ones are in it that were there in 1999 when I bought it. Those old tractors were designed to burn about any kind of liquid fuel, so something is making your spark weak.

I'll check the spark color and open the plug gap more. Mine burns no oil and otherwise runs good, but maybe a little low on power. Just gettin' real tired of changing plugs every 3 or 4 starts!! Thanks!

I think I am running Autolite 295's. It's what ever the auto parts store told me was the equivalent of the Champion J8C. Does the tractor have copper plug wires on it?

The tractor does have copper plug wires. I've tried many different plugs (all those mentioned and then some!), all with the same result - I get 3 or 4 starts and then they are fouled. I can't lean out the carb any more or it cuts out with no power when it warms up. I'm wondering if I could have a valve or intake problem?

Do the plugs have gasoline, oil, or just carbon on them? Does the tractor spit and sputter any when you rev it up? Does the engine have much black or blue smoke? Does it smoke when you first start it?

The plugs just seem to have carbon on them. It does spit and sputter when revving before it gets warmed up. When warm it runs pretty good, but maybe a little low on power. It doesn't have any blue smoke at all, just a little black when it first starts.

I haven't tried this plug but I've tried many, all with the very same results. I get 3 or 4 starts and then they are fouled, no matter what plug. With a professionally rebuilt carb and a good mag, it seems like it might be something with the valves or intake?

Hey Barry: You said it all when you said Champion Plugs. Get them out of there & get Autolites. Get the hottest Autolite recommonded for the SC.

I've used Champion and several different Autolite plugs, all with the very same results - 3 or 4 starts and then they're fouled. Can't lean out the carb any more, cuts out when it warms up.

What is the hottest Autolite I should run in my '51 SC? I am having some of the same problems and am running Champion plugs also.
