How much can you safely shave off a DC head to increase compression? How much will this help HP? Do the tappets adjust enough to compensate for the reduced head height? My DC has 4 1/16" flattops, 5505 head, Delco ignition, and rejetted carb. I would like to hit 50 HP. Thanks for the help.

We took .125 off of a 5505 head and then shimmed up the rocker arm stands to match. It does give the old girl some compression.

THICKNESS OF THE HEADS WILL VERY BUT YOU CAN TAKE .100 OFF MOST. YOU SHOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM GETTING 50 + HP

The engine was rebuilt years ago by my grandpa but I doubt he shaved the head. If so, it was probably just a small amount for warpage. I'll go 0.080" just in case. Would I need to shim the rocker posts?

I have a good LP head if you are interested. I shaved 100 thou off my other lp head, and used a copper gasket 30 thou compared to the stock one at 90 thou.. I beef up the spring presure to snap those valves . I pull 2nd gear with stock engine.
I just need to get it hooked, no power problems.

What do you want for the LP head? Where would you get the 0.030" gasket? Have you had any problems with the thinner gasket leaking? How did you increase spring pressure, just shimming? If so how much? Thanks for all the help and answers.

Barry email me about the head, they don't like us to price things on the board.I made the gasket with copper flashing .Used a lock-tite sealer made for metal to metal sealing. I have been pulling it for three years.there are two springs per valve plus shimes. I need to back them off alittle because i bend a push rod from time to time.
I had a fellow do the head, and can't remember exactly what he did. I will try to find the bill for detail.

There is a procedure for checking your valve to piston clearances by putting playdough or something similar on the valve heads. It might be a good thing to do after you have the head shaved just to make sure you have enough clearance. If you have an old head gasket, I guess you could put it on there and torque it down to check the clearances? I'm not sure what the proper procedure is.
