I'm looking at a propane 830 with Case-o-matic transmission. What is everyones opinion of this transmission? I'll use the tractor for general farm use like plowing, planting disking, mowing, etc. What about this tractor? Is it worth the $2300 asking price? Assume the tractor to be in common shape with less than 3000 hrs. showing. Don't know if the tach works. How does one fill the fuel tank on-farm? thanks

Bill,
I am a fan of the COM system, and have asked many time what a dry clutch tractor can do that can't be done with a COM equiped machine. I have yet to get any replies that I consider satisfactory. The key is you have to know the system and how to operate it. The following diatribe is a version of the many I have written on this board regarding the use of the COM. The primary thing to remember is to do all your gear changes at low throttle settings, add throttle and be a bit patient as the torque converter picks up the load. There is no "slipping" the clutch with the clutch pedal, it is simply a hydraulic valve connected to the foot pedal that when released with a high throttle setting will result in a bang very similar to doing a neutral drop with your car. Do all your "slipping" with the throttle Also, use the direct drive clutch after the load has been picked up. Since you just acquired this tractor I would also recommend changing the the oil and filters in the case-o-matic system, or at least giving them a good look see. Good luck with your new purchase.

I find it hard to believe there is only one opinion on case-o-matic at this point. For what it's worth, I like mine. I agree with dctom that it does take a little getting used to. Need to be at an idle when shifting, period. Once you are moving, you can go to direct. Keep it full of the right kind of oil and you should be ok. A case dealer will tell you to use Hy-Tran, and it seems to be ok. The price you give looks good, give it a whirl. Good luck.
