Hey all,
Dad's ordered a new steel barn to be put up, but his old one has to go first.. you know that whole physics thing about 2 things can't occupy the same space at the same time and all..

Grandpa tells me that the barn was originally built in about 1874. It's all hand hewn timbers and wooden peg construction. The northern Michigan seasons has taken it's toll on it, over the years, though. The roof and a lot of the exterior wood close to the roof and close to the ground aren't any good, but the main beam structure is pretty sound and the planks on the interior and some of the exterior walls are decent.

He doesn't want to just toss a match to it, he'd rather have it go to someone that could/would reuse whatever they could salvage from it.
Does anyone know of any old barn salvage outfits that might take it down and haul away whatever is still good? The barn is located in the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. There's a lot of mixed feelings about seeing the old barn go, but it would take to much time and money to try and fix. If someone was to salvage what they could and reuse it, that would make us all feel a lot better about it. Thanks for any leads you might have.
-Mark

I would be interested in some of the timbers. Would saw them for lumber. I make furniture I am In the central UP, Marquette. I really don't have the means to tear the thing down though.

I am in the process of taking down two old barns,,,,,Just wondering the length of the timbers and if they're tamarac. Are you in the western UP? Maybe someone could recycle them for timberframing.,, Bernsy

Bernsy,
The barn is at my dad's place in the Eastern UP just outside of the Soo. I'm not 100% sure if the timbers are tamarac or not. I'm thinking they're either oak or maple for some reason, though... They're good size timbers too. If you know anyone that may be interested in it, let me know so I can pass it along to dad and it may just make his day.

Mark you might try searching on google or yahoo. I ran "barn salvage AND Michigan" on google and got a bunch of links, a couple of which seem like they might work? Good luck.

Campbell,
I did a search and found a ton of bed and breakfast places where someone turned an old barn into a hotel or resturaunt, but I did find a couple of salvage outfits too. Will make some calls and see what we come up with. I was kind of hoping that someone may have some experience with an good reputable outfit or know of one that might be interested in it. Thanks for the reply, though.

Just a thought..... put it on Ebay for a starting bid of one dollar. I'm sure that it will get the attention of someone interested. Just be sure to put your time limits, liability disclaimers, what's expected of the people tearing it down, and so on in the ad. Who knows, you might even make a few bucks in the process (but if not, you should at least get the attention of the right people). I've seen much stranger things on there!
