DI clutch hanging up

I've restored a 1951 DI-NT & I haven't run it much because of the long winter. After it sits for awhile, the clutch "hangs up" pretty good. I have to lay on the foot brakes & hand brake to disengage it. What causes this? What adjustments do I need to make? Does a wet clutch have any- thing to do with it?

I read somewhere that the clutches stick because the oil forms a suction where the rivits are countersunk in the lining. I've heard that you can stop it by drilling very small holes throught the rivits to break the suction. I don't even leave my hand clutch tractors parked with the clutch engaged for fear they will stick. You could wedge the clutch pedal down with a block wood when not in use, but that might take its toll on the pressure plate springs.

di guy we have a few d's and we have had that same prob. an old case mecanic told my dad that what the prob usually is is that when changing the oil in the engine it wont get into the clutch housing on its own very good so dump a quart in the clutch housing when you change oil agian. now im not saying you dont have another prob but a quart of oil is cheaper and easier to try than replacing the clutch so if you want try this and let me know if it worked

We have had thwe same problem especially in the winter. A old case mechanic told us to drain the oil from the clutch housing, fill it with a quart of fresh oil and quart of diesel fuel. He claims that the problem is old thick oil creating an suction so it wont release. By doing it this way it will flush out the system and get the sludge out. He recommended doing this at least one oil change per year.

In restoring the tractor did you have the clutch apart? If so, you may possibly have put the clutch disk in backwards. This is an easy mistake to make. If it's in backwards the clutch will not disengage sometimes when you want it too. We had this experience with our '51 DC. Glenn F.

Hey DCTOM: I had to do the same thing with my Foot Clutch DC3. Works well.
