Battery will not hold charge. Tractor came with a rebuilt Lucas 65 amp alternator. The electrical system has been modified ( many splices/disconnects in harness ) and I can't tell what's causing the problem. Can anyone suggest a manual that has schematics, etc. or provide advice ? Thanks.

Ian

One of my biggest complaints with these tractors is the electrical systems. A quote I got on here one time "Lucas electric, the folks who invented darkness".

A full wiring harnass for these runs about $1000 from Case. Most common culprit I have found is that the ignition key hangs in the heat position (between start and on). This is an unfused circuit to the manifold heater which (soon) melts the insulation off the heater wire which just happens to be right in the middle of the main wiring harness. This then results in various shorts.

Second most likely culprit is that their is a diode burned out in the alternator. IT book has a pretty good schematic to test if you have a good multi meter.

Thanks for the reply. I think you're bang on there as someone has already fused that manifold heater line. What you have posted seems to fit because I also seem to be having problems with the ignition switch sticking, too ( I've ordered a replacement ). I disassembled the harness from the ignition switch back to the solenoid and found a lot of melted/fused plastic, but haven't got to the point of continuity testing the wires yet. Was the Lucas alternator stock on this tractor ? I'm not likely to fork out the $1000.00 for a new harness - I'll try and make the repairs myself.

You mentioned an IT manual, I'm embarrassed to say I don't know what that is.

Thanks for your help

Ian

Joe,

I'd love a copy of the schematic - Email, Fax , Reg. Mail ? . Let me know what's most convenient for you. ( [email protected] ) I did get some info from local Case dealer today, but it is incomplete. They suggested I buy IT manual :-)

Got the alt tested today, putting out 15V. Also repaired connector on alternator - wires frayed. I bought a new starter switch today, too. I didn't realize that they are spring loaded to return to run position, my old one was that knackered, and that likely was the problem ( as was suggested in earlier post). Thanks to everyone for the help. I'll let you all know if problem is fixed.

Lucas was standard on most, there was a Delco that came on at least some of the 1410's.

I&T service and repair series of tractor 'shop manuels'. Made by Intertec publishing a division of Primedia. May be a link here, can oder from Primedias web site. My email's unmasked if I can be of further assistence.
