Howdy, I just purchased a 1963 930 and the front end wanders on it quite a bit. I have not yet purchased a shop manual but was wondering if someone could tell me where I could adjust some of the slop out of the steering. Any other 930 observations would be appreciated as well.

Thanks Much!

There is an adjusting screw on the right side of the steering box, loosen the jam nut & turn the screw in enough to remove the end play, if that don't fix it, you may have other trouble inside the gear box.

Check the pivot point where the front axle pivots. There should be a sleeve or collar in there and they wear out. One of mine really wandered and shook in road gear but replacement of the bushing cured that.

Is this manual steering? Most likely place for play is in the steering worm gear at the bottom of the column. This can be tightened by pulling the column out of the top of the transmission housing and tightening the nut on the worm gear at the bottom of the steering shaft. Tighten only enough to remove the play and not bind on the bearings. If the wear is very bad, it may be necessary to install a bronze washer at the top of the column housing... Gene

Nice lookin 930! 1st place to look is all the tie-rod ends. Foot clutch or hand clutch? The very last chain drives had foot clutch.

John, Thanks.. it is pretty complete. Mostly cosmetic stuff it seems except for the steering. It is a hand clutch model. One tie rod end has a bit of play but the slop I am talking about is there is about 3/4 of a turn of play in the steering. Other than that good runner but a slow to brake whicj from what I have read is typical. Steering first.. then the brakes. Any ideas where to adjust?

If your brakes are like the early 930's, follow your brake rods down and you will see a threaded portion and a nut. Turn the nut in and shorten eseentially shortening the rod that goes into the brake housing. If this does not work then it is likely that your brake linings could have come apart or they perhaps need used some.
