I found a manufacturer to reproduce the Oil Press. Guages for the VAC & 200B. The Guage only goes to 30PSI. They told me to get permission from CASE Co. I talked to an arrogant Lawyer @ CASE. At first he flatly refused. Then he said for $2,000 up front, and a royality of around $5.00 per guage, they would OK it. He said they had to "protect" their heritage. I told him I was trying to "preserve" some of that heritage. To say that I was dissappointed is a gross understatement.

John you're familiar with the item I'm reproducing, and it's considered a registered trademark, they were considerate with my conversation with them but they also had some restrictions and limitations, which I want to definately abide by. call me, don't want to say to much here.

Lets all keep a clear head on issures like this. We live in the finest country in the world. We all have property rights which are we hope are protected. CASE has rights to their name and image whether they chose to use it wisely or not.Just because they may not be using it wisely, doesnt give any of us the right to take it over. If you happened to not be planting all your land in corn and I personally felt that the world needed more corn, would that give me the right to come onto your land and plant corn for myself ?? Let's all keep the ability for logical thought no matter what our feelings or biases may be.

My dad has several old Case tractors and I am a lawyer, California law School BA, MA and MBA, I only say that to qualify my comments. Remember, legal advice is worth waht you pay for it. I appreciate the guys who spoke up to protect property rights but, in this case, I think they may be wrong. Copyright law is specific. If copyrights have expired then there is no problem reporducing these guages for profit. The Case lawyer was just doing his job. He is there to protect the company and make money for them. Even if there is copyright protection you can make the guages if you don't sell them and, if they are made in a country like China, it is legal there. John you probably should just have gone ahead and done it. Look at ebay. There are hundreds of Case logos, eagles, decal sets for sale daily and they are not paying Case royalties. Is that legal? Probably, because Case has given defacto approval. Ted, if you can get them made you are not doing anything illegal and may be doing my Dad a big favor. If you start selling them for profit, then one of these guys could complain, but I doubt if it would stand up in court. Just my opinion.

Hey Vichea: I appreciate your comments. The manufacturer I had lined up would not proceed any farther until I had the permission from CASE. If I knew where to go overseas, I would. Currently, I sell imported guages with the CASE logo, but the guage in question in not being reproduced at this time.

I feel the same way as AJK. I think John would have been told the thing if he would have called JD, Caterpillar, or any other company. Why should Case let John or anyone else make profits from there name. My feeling are that if John is that upset with Case, there is always JD.

I suppose we can start using Teds name if he's over 25 yrs old. It's just like the Mccormick name no one could use it till the rights to the name were sold. Just think where we would be today if there weren't any copy right laws to keep some sob making money off something someone else created. You see more and more Cities getting copy rights to there name. Well enough said.

thanks for your post AJK, there are a few that make since.

No one has said one word about making money! John is talking about restoring an antique.Your logic would prevent a modern painter from restoring the Mona Lisa. I think you need some of Old Schools prunes!

Hey, we're not talking about starting up NAPSTIR and stealing property rights. I believe the patent/copyright on these guages, built 60 years ago, has expired, since the script has been changed. If we were to use the current Case script or one that is less than the 25?? year protection I could see your point. If there was land abandonded for 50 years, in some states you could squat on it and raise your corn.

I bought an oil pressure gauge with CASE on it from Antique Gauges Inc., 12287 Old Skipton Road, Cordova MD 21625, (410) 822 - 4963. I think it was black face with white lettering. That was about 1998.

They can stick that in their ear (trying to be nice on this board!) I've got SW gauges in mine and I am seriously considering installing the bulbs in them to have a "lighted" SC dashboard. Wouldn't that be cool???

Hey Old School: If CASE would produce them so we could but them & restore our tractors that would be fine. They won't produce them. If I did as they say, the final cost of the guage would be so costly nobody would buy them. You can go to a Deere Dealer & buy any guage for any tractor ever built. I admire Deere for the way they support their old iron. CAT is another one.

From what was said above JD encourages this. I think the particular copyright for that script has expired anyway. I don't see it used anymore.

Hey John, I live in Cambodia. No copyright laws here, they also don't make guages, but I might find someone in China who can make them. What do you think?

I believe that you have confirmed what I've suspected for a long time.....they have met the enemy and he is them (Pogo...kind of). Perhaps they don't see thousands or even millions of ball caps, t-shirts, etc. as free advertising..... they want a piece of the action on penny-ante stuff and to h..l with selling equipment? John Deere evidently sees this a bit differently perhaps, which could be why you see green/yellow everywhere.
