I have a 1969 CK 580 backhoe. I want to put an addition on the house in the near future. Assuming the machine operates ok, can I dig the foundation with it? I'd guess an 8 foot deep hole when I am done. Any tips on how to do so. I figure I can save a few grand on the excavation cost this way. thanks

I would suggest you do some practice digging first as hole has to be fairly level for footings I have an old MF 203 I play with and digging a foundation would require some idea of what to do. invest in a transit or tripod level and or get an experienced operator to use your machine to do it. I have all the 580CK manuals copied and for sale 800 page shop manual, 186 page parts book and operators manual drop me an email if interested in buying any copies. [email protected]

Get a 580CK Loader Backhoe Operators Manual #9-1885 from your CASE dealer. It has instructions for digging basements. It is also full of other useful information.
Good Luck,

The machine will have no problem. My 530 has a digging depth of about 14 feet. At the very least I'd invest in a "Home Construction" book before tackling the addition. It's not as easy as just dig and build.
Good luck however you do it, GARY

Thanks, I'll get that manual. Also, having dug a bit this weekend I and see that this wont be a problem mechanically for the machine, but will challenge the skill of the newby operator. I have most of the summer to practice, so here we go. And as a bonus, I can use the fill elsewhere. Thanks for all the tips and info.

Dig your job; Try to get 2 or 3 estimates for digging your basement addition from local contractors. Once you know those numbers you can get more serious about your own CK 580 digging effort. If your smooth enough to not damage your existing foundation that is a big consideration.
A hole that size will produce a very large pile or two of burden. Best of luck in your choosen method of home improvement.
