My '54 SC will not spin out in low gear. The engine just slows down until it kills. I took my H out Saturday and pulled a big hill in 5th and the governer could be heard delivering more fuel. The SC pulls the hill but the carb doesn't show any reaction to the load. It slows down and regains speed at the top of the hill. I think my governor is not working properly and am going to switch it out with another one to see if it will pull better. Any thoughts on this matter would be appreciated. The engine has been rebuilt, new 3 5/8 sleeves, aluninum M&W button top pistons and high compression head. I figure it should be good for 30HP but a good H will burry me in a pull. I think I should be able to handle an H easy.

Two easy things to try on lack of power. First, open the needle valve 1/4 turn at a time. Second, open the point gap to at least .018 and maybe even .020 - make sure plugs are properly gapped. The SC will run smooth even if it is starving for gas or lacking hot spark - just will not deliver any power. I set my needle valve running up and down a hill in 4th gear. When I replaced the old sediment bowl assembly, it ran better than ever - fuel flow was restricted.

The SC should be able to out pull the Farmall H. It could just be a linkage adjustment problem. Will it open up and pull if you manually operate the governor to carburetor linkage? You may have to fasten a wire or string to it to test it.

The best way that I've found to test the pulling power is to stick a set of plows behind it. It's also a good time to tweak the timing. Mine didn't have the power that it should and I kept turning the distributor as I was plowing. It should pull 2-14" plows in 2nd. gear.

I agree you should have more power than the H. You said you'd put M&W's in it. I knew a guy who had a IH M and he had the same problem. He'd put in M&W's, and no power, 30hp. They tried everything, new carburator, checked the compression, governor, etc. Nothing worked. Finally he plulled the cover off the front of the engine and found he was one tooth off on the timeing gears, put it back together and whalla! 52hp.
