I need to replace the stem and I remember back several months ago the topic was discussed but I can't find it. Can anyone tell me the size of the oil passage hole(s) in the stem?

I used a Steel brake line to make the stem. It works if copper tubing is not readily available. The other post is correct with the dimensions of the extra holes.

I just replaced my old oil filter with a fram c-159 and noticed that the filter had a HOLE IN THE CENTER of it.Where the oil filter screws on there is no stem. Mine is a 1952 vac should there be one???? Also a friend of mine told me as long as the filter seals and has no leaks it should be just fine.My lifters are not making any additional noise so i hope it is ok...Thanx...Richard

I think your friend is wrong. Without a stem you are not filtering much of anything. Also without the resistance to flow created by the flow restricting stem, your oil will seek the path of least resistance. So instead of pushing on up into the head, a lot of your oil only makes it up to the filter housing through the large hole where the stem goes and drains back down.

C. AMICK HAS IT RIGHT; I HAVE A 1949 WISCONSIN AIR COOLED MOTOR I USE TO RUN A BUZZ SAW.
WHEN YOU BUY THE PROPER OIL FILTER FOR YOUR OLD MACHINES IT COMES WITH STICK IN IT TO MAINTAIN THE FILTER MEDIA HOLE. YOUR SUPPOSED TO PULL AND TOSS THAT STICK BEFORE INSTALLING ON YOUR RIG.
MY FILTER HAS A MALE THREADED FEATURE. THE V4 ENGINE HAS A MOUNTING WITH A PENCIL SIZE 3.5 INCH LONG CENTERED SHAFT. WHEN MOUNTED PROPERLY THE ENGINE OIL FLOW GOES THROUGHT THE INTERNAL SHAFT ORIFICE. THE OIL IS DISCHARGED SO IT HAS TO FLOW THROUGH ALL OF THE FILTER MEDIA THEN BACK INTO THE OIL PAN. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THAT SHAFT FEATURE ANY MORE THEN YOU MAY GIVE YOUR ENGINE THE SHAFT THRU POOR OR NO, NADA, NONE, ZIPPO OIL FILTRATION. THIS TYPE OF FILTER WAS ABANDONED QUITE AWHILE AGO ON MOST EQUIPMENT. OLD TIME PARTS PERSON(S) MAY STILL REMEMBER THEM. THE NEWER CROWD MAY NOT HAVE A CLUE.

I think it should be there. If not the oil will just enter and flow right out. The stem forces the oil to the top and thru the filter media. The replacement I bought had a wood dowel in the hole. I guess to keep the media from settling.

I made mine from copper tubing. I had to sand down the lower end to get it to fit into the oil filter housing hole and had to batter the upper end to reduce the opening size. Once I battered the upper end, I smoothed it down with sand paper and drilled the other holes in it.

Richard, It is just an interference fit. There is not enough differential pressure to push it out of the socket.

I made mine from copper tube also but I didn't know how much to pinch it off. I put it together wide open and now the filter get hot. It didn't before and that tells me the oil now passing thru the filter.

Here are the passage sizes from a new one bought about 4 years ago:

1. Stem tube is 0.24" OD x 3-3/4"L above press shoulder.

2. Three orifices (measured 0.002"): one @ vertical top of tube 0.081". 5/16" down from top of tube and 180 apart 2 @ 0.093".

The total area of the 3 holes exceeds the ID of the tube indicating they are used as directors and not as orifices or retrictors. The filter media is the restrictor.

I have seen older ones with just the two side holes near the top. The filter is the by-pass (shunt) type. The hole size is not critical, smaller is better to keep the oil pressure up in the rest of the engine for lubrication.

Thanks for the info. My tractor has run for years with a stem but I doubt if the filter did much filtering. Previous owner didn't know it was supposed to be there.
