I am in the process of restoring a 1947 vac narrow front. Does any one know if the rear pto is suppose to have a guard on the top of it? mine doesn't, and all of the one's I've seen I never really noticed. The reason I ask is because some one is selling one on ebay. Also the leaver to turn on the rear pto what does it consist of? Mine is just a piece of flat steel about a 1/2 inch wide. Someone cut the end off with a tourch it is now about 6 inches long. I'm wondering what they cut off. My vac does not have an eagle hitch if that helps. Thanks...

My dad's '48 VAC narrow has the guard intact, and has the same flat steel bar you mention. His hasn't been cut, it's about 14" long if I recall correctly. No control rod like shown in the photo on his, just the steel lever.

I believe that they all came with the guards but most were probably removed by someone in the field for ease in attaching implement PTO shafts. As for the operating lever, the parts view shows the configuration from the factory.

Never saw a VAC until today, but the picture of the guard is/was correct. The one I saw was setting off to the side because it gets in the way of a pulley for the belly mower that the 81 year old retired farmer just installed. Again, I never saw a VAC before, and happened upon this one by accident while looking at another. It's mint and for sale, but... Actually, I got the biggest kick out of shooting the bull with the 81 year old that explained every inch of his 55 VAC, and his Allis D-15. Wish there was a way to store his memory on a hard drive. Wish that he was computer literate and could go on-line with you guys. And, wish I could come up with an excuse to bring home that cherry VAC and not get clobbered over the head with a skillet.

Yes, the PTO is supsoed to have a guard over it. I think it's the same setup0 as the SC/DC, where the gaurd simply picks up the bolts that hold the PTO seal holder onto the rear end.

I can't remember what the lever is for the PTO shaft. I know it simply slides a gear on the shaft to engage/disengage the PTO shaft gears. I think the PTO lever on ours is about a foot long, and is easily accessible from the driver's seat. I may be wrong- it's been a while since I messed with it. We've been pre-occupied with this blasted old 830.
