I'm looking at buying a Case 480 late 70's. It does have a few problems, maybe someone can give me some answers. The rear sprockets have been changed along with on of the front idlers and adjuster. That one has about 60% travel left. The other adjuster is maxed out and the idler wheel is worn. How big of a job is it to replace and what's the best way?

The other area is when I tried moving it it wouldn't budge for 30 or 40 seconds until the hydraulic pressure all of a sudden built up then it was fine (shuttle shift syle). I did notice while steering that at times it would steer great and other times the inner track would also turn, figured it was me not being in neutral witht he lever. Does this sound like a problem?

I'm just looking for something I can use around my land as I build a house. I expect a few leaks and such but I don't want to get over my head. If anyone would care to share an opinion or let me know what they think please reply.

Correction that should be Case 450 not 480. Was just doing some minor work to my 580K and must have typed wrong.

First things first... How long has this machine been sitting or for that matter does it spend it's life outside?? It may just need to be serviced: all the fluids and filters changed. These are pretty bulletproof units but do fail like anything else. As far as undercarrige, sounds like the one side the pins&bushing are worn out internally as the idler wear alone will not let the adjuster out to the end. Did you count links on both sides??? Replacing idler is not that big a job and if you need parts or more info on the undercarriage of that machine, I know someone that can help you. Email me and I will send link.
