I have a 53 VAC that I've had for years. It's always been a super slow cranker. It has the original 6 volt system and fully charged it still barely turns over and will not if hot. What can I do to speed it up?

Your problem might not be the starting system. Six volt systems always are slow to turn over, especially in colder weather. When the engine is hot and will barley turn over it is some times because the timing is to far advanced. The plugs are firing before the pistons reach top dead center on the compression stroke. Try moving the distributor a little.

My 51 was always hard to start with 6V.
I could start it with a hand crank with 1 to 3 half turns.
I changed it to 12V and it starts great.

All batteries are not equal. Look at the cranking amps.

Make sure you have a good ground and perhaps increase the size of the battery cables. I think they are supposed to be #2 cables. I have even used a #1 cable.

The assumption is that your battery is in good condition and being fully charged by the generator (ie. putting out 6-7 volts to the battery). You might want to check all the connections to and from the battery and starter motor for corosion and/or resistance. If that doesn't help then perhaps a check needs to be made on the starter motor for excessive current draw. The starter motor may need to be cleaned and overhauled and/or bushings replaced.

Roger all of that! The starter motor in particular never seems to get any TLC....just R&R'd when it finally craps out.
