VAC still acting up, but a clue!

So I talked to my father tonight and the VAC still isn't running. It's been down all winter, and it's getting frustrating! As some of you recall, I was up there a month or two ago and did a bunch of work - rewired a lot of the ignition system, replaced the coil, replaced and gapped the points (finally had spark again after this step), pulled and checked the carb, and a few other things as well.

Since then my father has tried to get the tractor running a few more times. He's removed the breather to make sure air was getting to the carb, replaced the rotor, and replaced the gasket on the sediment bowl. No luck. Kind of.

Here's the odd part. On two occasions since I left, my father has gotten the tractor to start and run but only for a few seconds each time. Each time the tractor started it had sat for some time since the last attempt to start it. Each time the tractor starts right up on the first try, runs for a few seconds, then dies and can't be started again.

So I'm back to thinking when the carb was rebuilt (shortly before this problem started) some putz hosed something up - maybe a jet? When I pulled the carb originally it had plenty of fuel, and the floats were free. No obvious problems.

What does everyone think? Also, anyone in the Saratoga, NY area that knows these machines and would like to take a look? I'd be happy to meet you there - don't want you to have to deal only with the old man!

Thanks!

I would look at carb.
Take a spark Plug out and shoot a little gas into cylinder and try.

I'd check the plugs. My VAC has been sitting idle for a while and when I put in new plugs it started on the first crank. I've had this old thing for two years and everytime I have had problems, it was the plugs.
Good luck.

Robert

Hey, check to make sure you did not put fiberglass auto plug wires on your tractor. The built in noise suppression on auto wires will break down the currrent.May be why it will hit on the first start, and then shut down. This happens if you are still on the 6 volt system.Try to use copper core wires.

did install new plugs, just because they fire out side of head means nothing, under compression if they are fouled do to all your starting attempts you are fooling youself.you said it near fires after a long rest.that may mean voltage is up in ignition, then a plug or 2 have dried and fire then you have nothing.try pulling all plugs out if under cover and leave for days.install new ones and attempt restart with a well charged battery and* NEW *dry plugs.you may then tune carb once running,if that does it.check firing order for crossed plug wires too.

If you have some crud in the tank, line, bowl screen or float needle it COULD be letting just enough by to run until the carburetor bowl level drops and the engine dies. Do you have spark immediately after it dies? If not, replace the condenser and try it. A coil can go intermittent as well. You're either running out of air, fuel or spark. Try to isolate it.

Thanks all for the comments. By all rights this tractor should fire right up. It's has a new coil, new points, new condensor, new plugs, rebuild carb, and should be getting plenty of air. The only things I can think of are maybe the new coil isn't right or maybe the carb wasn't rebuilt right. After turning it over a few times the *new* plugs (correctly gapped) are wet with gas, so that leads me back to spark, but everything on that side of the tractor is new! At least everything spark-related. Since it started once or twice (if only for a few seconds) I've ruled out anything like timing or hung valves, so it HAS to be something simple I'm missing.

Already double checked that, and they are. Thanks for the post though! I welcome all the help anyone is willing to offer.

Old fuel... and check for spark when cranking the engine over...but, more than likely its bad gas at this point. Drain the tank and try some fresh fuel. You also might want to change the oil because it becomes saturated with the fuel that is sucked in past the rings when it does not start. This can cause poor compression in the combustion chamber because it blows by the rings when the cylinder walls get washed down by gas. GOOD LUCK!
