I have seen pictures with the muffler vertical next to the engine and pictures with the exhaust going under the chassis. My 1957 311 has not had any exhaust system (or much of the exhaust side of the manifold for years.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave, I have a 430 with a underneath exhaust.
Pros. Looks better. Better view from the tractor seat. Good clearance for mowing around trees with a finishing mower. Same for tree grove with a rotary mower. Less smell and smoke in your face. Much easier to take hood off the tractor as the exhaust doesn't have to come off first. Can park the tractor in any shed with a short door.
Cons. Have to be careful when haying with heat and sparks down there. Stinks when standing behind, hooking up implements. Summer time mostly, a hot foot to contend with.

Just for kicks I used both exhaust ports off the manifold. I had elbows made to have dual exhaust coming up. I like the sound and both pipes sticking up. Terry

The manifold on the 311 has two places for the exhaust pipe and could be used as a down muffler or with an elbow a up muffler. The side panels are made with an opening for the up muffler or plain for the down one. I have those panels.

Thanks, That is what I need to know. I Have the elbow and a new manifold and was't sure which would be better - suspected the vertical would be.

Thanks,
Dave
