400 Hydraulics Question

I have a Case 400 (not the B series) with hydraulics, but no 3 pt. The hydraulics don't work. When I push or pull on the levers, the tractor makes no noise whatsoever, or any attempt to pressurize the outlets. It acts as if the pump is not attached internally. Is there anything simple I should look for or check before I pull the pump housing off the back. Any ideas in the right direction would be helpful. Thanks.

Had one on DC that froze up (little piece of metal came from somewhere) and rung the shaft off. Had another on DC that a needle from the needle bearing come out, got in the gears and tore up the coupling to the pump. Thought the chain would break before either of these would give.

Nope. Driven directly from PTO mainshaft from flywheel. That's why I suggested doing a load test of PTO to make sure hub that shaft seats in isn't hogged out.

Pat, I bought the tractor two summers ago and don't know the history on it other than its supposed to have a new clutch, (which now makes noise). I used the tractor on a manure spreader that summer and the pto worked fine, (no hydraulics needed). Last summer, I hooked it to a 6 wheel hay rake, and the hydraulics were dead. I now suspect they weren't working when I bought the tractor, but I guess thats my problem now. I am getting a 400 IT&T book soon. Thanks for the information as I didn't know where to start looking for the source of the problem.

Have you owned the tractor a while or just get it? Water in oil frozen? Hyd oil level and filter plugged check would be next step. Next would be check relief valve if all parts are there and working. Check if PTO operates under load, that tells you main shaft from flywheel driving PTO/hyd pump is good. Possible that control valves/spools are stuck or plugged. After that, I think you need to pull the hyd pump off and have a look-see. If you don't have one, get a shop manual.
