How do I change the axle seals on a VAC? I have the wheel off and it looks like the seal has been driven in from the outside. Do I just destroy it to remove it or is there an easy way?

This is one project that I have to do soon. One post in the archives suggests drillng a hole in the seal and installng a screw, then using a slide hammer attached to the screw to get the old seal out.

Well I Just checked in the service manual and axle seal removal is not addressed. they only give info on seal instlation so I guess your assumption of destroying the seal to get it out is proberally the correct method. instlation is typical for any seal using a seal installer, but i can assume you dont have one so I would sugest using a plastic face dead-blow hammer and just be carfull to install the seal as evenally as possible, one sujestion I have is to take some electrical tape and place over the edges of the axle shaft key way lengthwise to prevent the sharp edge of the key way from cutting the new seal when you slide it down the axle shaft.

The seal numbers I have are as follow
Case # VT 3749
CR # 25745 Hopes this helps
Pete

Thanks for the reply chicken. The keyway is not a problem as the axle is smaller than where the seal rests. Looks like it is time to experiment again!
