Room for oil filter on Case model V ???

Because my tractor is apart and in pieces, I can't tell for sure what the answer to my question is. The model V (and VC) tractors came from the factory without oil filters (on the little Continental flatheads that powered those units). Is there room between the air filter and the gas tank area to mount a standard cartridge-type filter canister on the engine's left side without getting in the way or being too crowded? I've never seen a V with a filter, I'd like to mount one somewhere, maybe where I mentioned or above the cylinder head if there was enough clearance to the tin hood.

Wouldn't you still need to "force" the oil through the filter, or at least route tho oil-return through the filter....anyone can mount as filter to the side of a motor...the trick would be to give the oil no place to go, but through the filter....seems to me if the oil can get to the pan, without going through the filter, it will...BTW hello Alberta Mike...I went to N.H. last weekend to look at that Case VAC, and the 41 Massey....the Massey was cobbled w/ all kinds of weld...I only bought the VAC....The Massey is a model 82, and painted the wrong collor. {blue} Take care...Art

Art;
The by pass type oil filters used on most engines is just that, a by-pass of the oiling system to alow the retention of normal oil pressure. The inlet fitting,or in some cases an orfice made in to the filter housing to restrict the oil flow through the filter system. The pressure suply line to the filter can come from a "T" in the oil pressure line to the oil pressure gauge. The return can be through a fitting in the side of the oil pan, a hole drilled and taped in the skirt of the block just above the pan flange. It could also be returned through valve chamber side cover by welding a fitting to the cover. The oil lines are under pressure so the feed and returns can run to a filter mounted most any where. I guess some of you youngens need the full picture.

The little Continental engine that I am dropping into the V had the the factory filter mounted on it (it was from a Massey swather) but I was just wondering about the room left after the V air filter bolts up, looks a bit tight to me.

Mike; When I got my model "V" it had an ugly paper filter bolted to the right side of the tool box area. When I get it going I am thinking of mount an filter off a Ford 8N as it is also a by-pass type filter and I dont like the looks of the spin on filters on the old tractors. Just not sure where I will mount it, if I put one on. Will only use mine as a toy and show's. May be in the tool box, by or next to the battery? Frank Fox
