Hi guys, I have a 580 ck 33 series. Have not had it very long and am checking fluid levels. Directly in front of the 1-4 gear shifter, is a dip stick with nothing on it, I can see red fluid inside the case, what type of fluid is this and is there a filter to change or screen to clean?
There also is a plug directly behind starter on bell housing looks like an inspection hole.is this what it is? Tractor takes a long warm up period before it will move.

Thanks Paul

If your 580CK has a "Power Shuttle" it also has a Torque Converter. The oil level for these items is checked by the dip stick forward of the shift lever. The original oil spec, per the inital printing of the operators manual, was ATF. But nowdays there are many different versions of ATF, therefore Case recommends, in the reprinted operators manual, to use their "TCH" fluid(Trans/Clutch/Hydraulic). The oil pump pickup tube for this system has a very small screen over it's bottom end. My 580CK was also very slow to build enough oil pressure to move the tractor, especially in cold weather, until I cleaned this screen. Which is a Big Job! as you must split the tractor or pull the pump to gain access.
On the question about the "plug" behind the starter. My parts manual says it is for "timing access hole". Perhaps for engine timing since when removed you are looking directly at the starter ring gear teeth, which must be marked somehow for setting engine timing.

The book now recomends hydraulic fluid instead of atf. The screen can be cleaned without splitting the tractor. I've done it although not very easily. Ended up splitting the tractor and rebuilding the shuttle anyhow.

Hi emil,

You say that you cleaned the sreen without splitting? How did you do this? Exactly where is the screen? I have a 580CK with a newly rebuilt motor, but the thing won't move one inch, no matter how long it's warmed up. It has a power shuttle with a 4 speed. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Yes it can be done, I just did mine. royal PIA you have to remove gas tank, steering wheel and post, Once you get to it remove the cover just in front of the shifter. the pickup tube will come out with that

Good luck
