The LA should have the serial # located on the engine block flange by the air cleaner. Once you have that number we can tell you what year it is.

YOu don't; that's just the part number for the
block.

Look on the left rear flange and there should be a number stamped on it. That's the serial number.

The number on the rear flange has been rubbed off somehow. That's why I was wondering if it could known by just the block number.

Crawl ubder the tractor and look on either side of where the drawbar pivots. There should be a casting date which is probably as close as you are going to get if the serial number is completely gone. I wonder if you might have a tractor that had the block replaced with a new one direct from the factory. That could explain why there is no serial number.

In the World WarII years and a few years after the war dealers and some reg. people dealt in black market tractors. They ground off the ser. no on the block and threw away the plate so they could sell the tractors without a no. to trace the sale. I bought a 47 LA at auction in 56 and it was that way. I took the paint off where the ser. no was supposed to be and poured on sulfuric acid and it brought out the no.

It seems like I learn something here almost every day. I guess I have too simplistic an outlook on life.
