It would be helpful to know what make and model generator you have. But, the third brush on most generators goes to the field windings. The other end of the field windings goes to ground. So the electricity passes through the armeture then on to the field brush to the field to excite the armeture which will energize the cut out coil thus connecting the armeture to the battery, charging it and running the lights etc. Moving the field brush up and down will give you different charging rates. Usually you will find from 5-15 amps. Yours may differ depending on year-make model. A good test before you put the generator back on is to motorize it. Do this in respect to polarity(if the tractor is positive ground make sure to connect the pos. wire to the frame of the gen)and the other wire to the stud that would go to the cut out. If the generator spins 600-1,000 rpm it is probably good. Don't let it spin for more than a few seconds as it will heat quickly.

If you have an external field wire sticking out of a 3 brush generator it most likely went to a high-low charging switch , possibly on the light switch. If you're talking just the internal wire the other post is correct.

It sounds like it goes to the light switch..I'll try it out. Thanks.
